Finished for Friday - Husband Hat

I did it!!
I finished a hat for my husband in time for a big snow
fall scheduled to arrive this weekend!

After making a hat for his brother, J asked me to make one for him. We went to JoAnn's together and J picked out the yarn. It was fun to share JoAnn's with him. We've been to Hobby Lobby and Michael's together, but this was a first.

I had some problems getting started, so MAM helped me out again, last Friday, when we met up at a cafe for some fun time together. Have I told you how much I really like MAM? I made this hat a little different from the last one, as I added 2 rows of double crochet stitches at the end, instead of higher up on the hat.

J said he liked it.
But he wasn't willing to model shirtless again...

Now, for the pattern.

More details on hats below....

UPDATE:
My husband lost his hat on the train last year so I made him another this year. I actually made six of these hats following this pattern for Christmas 2012. It's a versatile pattern and I mixed it up a bit - did some double crochet, added flowers, etc.

I'm not sure why some people in the comments below had a hard time with the pattern. I'm thinking that perhaps they may be crocheting too loosely - I'm pretty tight when I crochet.

Or, they may not be measuring the recipient's head as they go along. I measure to make sure it's not too loose. Once it seems like it will fit snugly, I stop increasing and just crochet the rows until i measure to see if it is long enough to cover the ears and hair of the recipient.

It is really important to measure the crown of the head and the length. I've used this same pattern for my kids and three different men. Some hats I make a little longer or bigger or shorter or narrower.

Have fun!

  1. Oh how lovely...and masculine! Love the visual of you and your husband selecting the yarn together. Envision that as being far calmer (and certainly more romantic) that the process of picking out yarn with 7-year-olds (which has been the extent of it for me thus far.) Thank you for the generosity of pattern....maybe some Valentine's Day wool selection is now in order... :)

    Beautifully done. :)

  2. Great job! Both on the finish and getting your husband inside a Joann's!

    I love that color.

  4. HI, I want to thank you for this pattern but I also Have a question. This is my first project using the rounds and I don't think I am doing it right. Does it not start to round and turn into a hat until you get to round 14 and on? What would happen if you didn't slip stitch to join and just continue with the next round? Sorry to be a pain but I have something that looks like a bike seat cover and I am on round 14 now. LOL. Just thought maybe you could help me and tell me where I went wrong. Thanks so much for the pattern.

  5. Christine I dont know if anyone has answered you or not and its been 3 months so youve either finished it or given up. The reason you slip stich the end of the row off is to complete "one" row so the amount of stitches is correct for each row. If you just kept going around and around you would loose track of what row youre on and it would be a bit odd looking plus finishing it off wouldnt be clean either.
As for it looking like a bike seat, I had to giggle because I have made a few of those in my lifetime! lol Most likely its your tension. When you crochet tighter it will pull the piece in making it curl especially if the row before was looser. You want to make sure to try to hold the yarn in your fingers the same way each time you make a project and not "hold" the yarn with your fingers. Just let it easily slide, but dont let it be completely loose.

Id love to know if you finished your hat! dnkpriest@gmail.com

  6. I am confused about what yarn to buy for this pattern. Lion Brand doesn't make a yarn labeled bulky that I can find. Can you please say exactly what the name of the yarn was? And when you say it was 12 stitches=4 inches gauge are you meaning knitting gauge or crochet gauge? I am thinking you are giving the knitting gauge of the yarn. But this confuses me, too, because usually a yarn that thick would take a K crochet hook or higher not a crochet hook as small as H. Using too small of a crochet hook for the yarn might be what is making the other lady's work curl up because it would create really tight work. Are you sure that you used a bulky yarn with a H crochet hook? Thank you.

  7. Hi Anonymous. I crochet so this was done with crochet needles. I believe I privately responded to the first person that inquired which is why there is not a public response from me.

I bought the yarn at Joanne Fabrics about two years ago. It says "5" in a little black window then "Bulky" below that. It could be referred to as "Chunky" as well. When I googled it, it looked like it may be discontinued. A thick, chunky yarn would work.

Good luck! Let me know if you need more help or if it worked out for you!

  8. Hi I am sort of having the same problem as christine ^ except mine doesnt look like a bike seat it looks like a frisbee. I have done rounds before though, so i was suprised that i didnt see any decreasing in the pattern. anyhow i have never had any problem in other patterns in reference to my tension but i will see if that is the issue :) if anybody has any other ideas what might be the problem please let me know. thanks ;)

  9. How many ounces of bulky yarn should I buy for this hat?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Anonymous, I used 1 ball of yarn or less if that is what you are asking. If you are asking about yarn weight, please see comments above. Good luck!

I can't wait to start this for my Son!

  13. This may be a silly question.... but, does the ch 1 at the beginning of each round count as the first sc?

  14. you know, I was just thinking, this pattern is SO EASY, I wonder if you could maybe put some shells or something to make this sort of girlie looking . I was thinking of making this for my 2 little granddaughters, or EVEN MYSELF

  15. OH!! Thank you so much for posting this pattern, the photo, and all the comments!! I have been looking for an hat pattern like this one for a while. I've been making (my own version of) Christmas Bell Ornaments using white yarn and adding colored mini glass beads to them. I started thinking about hats like the one you made because I was starting off the top of bells by creating a "round" for the top of each bell .... THANK YOU .... I will be making MANY of these hats now!!

  16. Can I do this in all double crochet?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I imagine you could do this in double crochet but that would look more feminine in my opinion. So if it's for a guy, I would only do a couple rows of dc.

For everyone else, I made this hat because I couldn't follow anyone else's pattern. And this was made about 2-3 years ago. I really don't remember details, nor am I an expert level - barely more than basic level.

  18. AllFreeCrochet.com listed your pattern as a beginner crochet hat. I'm thrilled to have finally found a hat my hubby likes!
    ;o)

Thank you for sharing your pattern with the rest of us!

  19. So i just made this hat for my dad, i'm a fast crocheter and it only took me about two hours. However there is something wrong with this pattern. Unless its supposed to be a baret it simply doesn't have enough rows. The hat doesn't even reach down to my dads ears.

  20. PearlyWearly, Sorry to say it but I do believe you did something wrong. This hat has been successfully recreated by over 100 people.

    1. I've only crochet for a few months now but the pattern is easy to read as well as understand. I read through my patterns before I start. A few others should do the same. This is my next project, thanks for a wonderful man pattern. :)

  23. SO I am starting row 16 and it is beginning to look more like a hat! yipeeee! I had to increase about two more rows because recipient claims to have a 23.5 circumference noggin! Hes a computer guy- go figure! Note: I did read DC as Double Crochet and not as Decrease....thanks for the clarification on the comments area. Thanks for the pattern too! smiles Julie

  25. I have just started to learn how to crochet . This is my first project I am staring, I have tried many others and nothing is working for me . I'm on row 15 and its still not looking like a hat.

  26. LOL... I just read your "Legal Disclaimer"... I only found you today & already feel related! Wish I had you here to SHOW me how to make this beanie!! I want to but seem to be missing something. Need "visual" instruction, too!! AND, I just want to say, I LOVE your blog!!!!!

  27. I consider myself an experienced crochet person, and on reading this pattern it all seems to be straight forward. The increase rows are all fine, and once you have the ?72 stitches, the hat is worked straight, then 2 rows of DC (treble in UK and AUST) to finish off the hat. There are NO decrease rows as such otherwise the shaping would be more like a gumnut! Hope this helps.

  29. anyone know where I can find a copy of the pattern in long hand instead of crochet short hand. I have been able to crochet scarves and such for a long time but never used patterns so I am not good at the abbreviations. I just had a person show me some stitches when I was a young teenager and have used those for years.
Some things I can figure out...like single crochet and slip stitch...but the rest is foreign to me. Like what is beg ch, and rep from * around?
    Thanks for you kind response.

  30. Thank you for the lovely pattern! My husband loves the hat. I've made 3 others as gifts last Christmas. I even stripped the hat by alternating yarn colors.

  31. Instead of advising to crochet tighter or looser, advise to switch out crochet hooks for those who are having a difficult time with gauge. There are also lots of places you can find info about them. Just a heads up. :)

  32. Aloha :) Yesterday an old woman I work for taught me how to crochet & I was hooked (Get it? Hooked?!). Last night I was looking for beginner patterns 'cause she taught me basic stitching but I wasn't really making anything. I happened to come across yours & I'm already half way through it. I'm a 31 single mama of 2 little boys & the only thing I ever make time for is surfing. The last thing I thought I'd be doing is crochet! Mahalo for the pattern!!!
