Really? I didn't think so

A few people commented (on blog or in real life) about the harshness of my previous few blog posts and/or comments.

Really?  I have read and re-read my blogs and comments. I don't see it. Okay. Maybe the one about Motor Mouth's hair might seem a bit harsh. But in my replies to comments, I thought I made it clear I was just reminiscing and laughing at some of the things people have said to me/us. I kinda had fun posting it. I was chuckling to myself the whole time.

J says the blog about homeschooling came across a bit edgy. I'm in the minority in the homeschool world on my views. There are so many diehard homeschoolers out there that want a Christian based curriculum that I found it harder to find a non-Christian homeschool program than a Christian one. I've had several offline conversations about my choice of curriculum so I saw this as an opportunity to answer those questions on a wider scale.

I changed the size of my font. Do you think that has something to do with it? Do you think people think I am shouting at them? I just found the font hard to read and am surprised no one asked me to make it bigger. Oh God, do I need bi-focals?

One of the reasons I love living in Chicago is that I don't have to sugar coat everything I say. People 'get' me here and I don't feel like I am this super harsh, northerner, big city girl trying to rephrase everything so as to not offend. Living in Tulsa was a lot like dancing on eggshells for me. I never really felt like I did the dance very well.

Now, I will be honest and tell you that when I am coming up on my period, it is best that I not communicate with people. My communication tends to be harsh and not widely accepted. But these posts were written after the hormones tapered back.

So my question to you is this:
Did you think my posts this week were harsh? Or do you think it is just a Tulsa people thing? Please be honest. We are in the safe hormone zone so I promise you will not get your head ripped off.

  1. Dang, you are up early!!
NO, I enjoy reading your blog daily and I have never felt you were harsh. I live in Tulsa and I understand your eggshell statment. I was surprised with the Ellen blog, but there was some VERY good insight that I had to stop and think about. Jazz hair was funny and your mom answer to home schooling was good. I was excited that in one blog you said you were going to go deeper.

  2. Harsh????
    I really don't think so.
Where were you "harsh"?? I don't get it?
I think you were sharing some very interesting and valid points of view - and showing your aggravation a bit with the Jazz post. Nothing wrong with that!

This is you, raw and unedited. Don't change!
Oh, but, ya...change the font. That little one SUCKS. What the he** were you thinking using that font you bone-head, you!!!
    {now, *that* was harsh}

  3. A blog is a challenging medium for meaningful conversation. I usually assume that we are all misunderstanding each other on a fairly regular basis! It is hard to convey tone.

Most often, I comment in agreement but save my counter-arguments for face to face conversations. I enjoy reading others' opinions on blogs but I rarely jump in to debate in a forum like this. (Hypocrite alert: I do like to read other people's debates! I just don't want to be in one!)

  4. I don't think that harsh was the word that I was thinking. It was just a little more in your face than you usually are. You have always been really good at making your point known with out affending anyone. I am not saying that you do, they just seemed a little more edging than you usually are. I enjoyed them none the less and giggled when I read them because I could read the attitude in it. Or I guess not because not because you said there was no attitude.

  5. Harsh? Not at all. I love your writing style - you tell it like you see it!

I lived down south for a short time and I felt like I was walking on eggshells, too (I'm from NYC, originally). I think it might be a cross-cultural thing.
